As a child, what I loved best about Curious George was his absolute inability to resist temptation, especially if fun was involved. His curiousity got him into all sorts of trouble and I got a vicarious thrill out of watching him get out of trouble and have everything turn out all right, but not without a lot of action and suspense and humor first.

What kid can’t relate to the constant struggle between following the rules and testing the boundaries.?

Luckily, this movie stays true to the spirit of the classic books and it features a stellar cast, including Drew Barrymare and Will Ferrell. They do fine in their roles.

DO keep in mind that this movie is NOT designed to entertain adults (as Shrek did) There aren’t the clever “in” jokes and the animation is a bit strange at times. Also, there are updates such as cell phones (not around when Curious George was created).

Curious George is a delightful book and a delightful movie. That the two don’t match up very well is a testament to changing times I think, and not because the creators of the movie didn’t care about preserving the original. But before I get into that I will review the movie as it stands on its own.

The “man with the yellow hat” (nicely voiced by Will Farrel) is a museum docent who cares passionately about his work and wants to communicate his love of history and the natural world to a disinterested city. It seems that the museum is failing financially, and destined to soon become a parking lot unless he and the owner can come up with a grand new attraction to bring in the money. So the man with the yellow hat buys the latest in adventure clothing and sets out to Africa on a mission to find a gigantic idol for their exhibit. NIce, sweet, appropriate for younger kids, August 23, 2006

I thought the movie was a breath of fresh air in an era of overhyped computer-animated “cartoons” full of in-jokes and sarcasm. This was a real cartoon- gently animated, slowly paced, and written for kids. No snarky sarcasm, no annoying talking animals, no ridiculous violence, just a sweet tale told so that it could be enjoyed by all ages. There is nothing to scare a very young child, and children will not come away with rude comments that they learned from it. It is what movies for kids should have always been.

The plot is slightly pointless, but the plot really isn’t the point anyway. The real point is how cute George is, and how nice it is to watch him being curious. The songs are sweet and not too loud or jarring. All of mine, from ages 2 up to 7, liked the movie, and it kept their attention without making them anxious. I wish I could give it six stars.

A spectacular sequel, May 26, 2011

The original Kung Fu Panda is one of the only Dreamworks Animation films that actually holds its own in comparison to Pixar films. It managed to capture the look and feel of the classics old and new that martial arts film enthusiasts such as myself admire so much while also offering humor that was actually funny, fantastic animation, and just an incredibly entertaining film overall. It turned out to not only be one of the more enjoyable animated films of 2008, but one of the best films of that year period. So, here we are, three years later with Kung Fu Panda 2 resting on the horizon of its release that actually feels just as strong as the original without all of the endless shortcomings most would expect to plague a sequel.

My husband, child, and I are fans of the original Kung Fu Panda, but I was rather wary about this sequel since most sequels are never nearly as good as their predecessors. Well, I am glad to be proven wrong by Kung Fu Panda 2! All three of us thought this was not only a worthy successor to the original but actually much better. The key elements that make an animated movie a winner are all here – a stellar cast, impressive animation, well-written script, and a story that appeals to both children and adults.

When it comes to sequels, it’s rare enough that one manages to measure up to the first film. More often than not they end up being disappointing to one degree or another. Particularly when you’re talking about animated films (the Shrek and Toy Story films being more the exception than the rule). But Kung Fu Panda 2 is that rarity among sequels in that, in my opinion, it is actually an improvement on the first film in quite a number of ways, which I’ll get to later.

Yes, this movie has plenty of funny moments, but there is a very real and sometimes rather touching story that takes precedence over everything that happens. You can’t get through the most serious of situations without the palliative of laughter now and again, and Life actually does tell a serious story. Eddie Murphy proves once again that he is a great actor, and Martin Lawrence was surprisingly good as the more serious of two men sentenced to life in prison for a murder they didn’t commit. One night in 1932, fate brought Rayford Gibson (Murphy), a smooth-talking hustler with big dreams, and Claude Banks (Lawrence) a respectable fellow about to start a good job, together in a New York nightclub. One of the very best comedies of ’99, October 27, 1999

I’ve seen "Life" twice thus far, and I must concede that it has to be one of the best films to ever cast Eddie Murphy. He and Martin Lawrence are just as emotionally poignant as they are downright hysterical in this memorable comedy/drama of two Prohibition-era guys from Harlem NYC who inadvertently become framed for murder in the Deep South while on a bootlegging run for the local crime boss they each owe debts to back home. They are soon enough sentenced to life imprisonment in a Mississippi chain gang where they share a "Felix and Oscar"-esque relationship that spans 65 years through thick and thin times (including numerous escape attempts). Not the aggressive Lawrence/Murphy humor; still a good movie, August 11, 2002

I did enjoy this movie, even as I enjoyed Martin Lawrence and Eddie Murphy’s more popular and critically acclaimed work. They are a pair of convicts, one of whom caught up after being “along for the ride”, but jailed nonetheless for life in the South some fifty years ago. They do persevere after, through and despite any number of bad (some unbelievable) circumstances. Life in prison makes them close.

It is very different from my other favorite prison movie, Cool Hand Luke. Like C.H.L., the brutality of prison life is left mercifully for other films. There is one scene common to both, though, with the prisoners resolving their issue boxing in the prison yard with typical results.

Cute Christmas Romance to end the Bah Humbug Feeling, November 20, 2005

I caught this movie on TV last year and thought it was very cute– just like those romance novels I read. So, when it came out on DVD, I had to buy it.

She is the girl-next-door type who made a wish a long time ago for a boyfriend for Christmas and has pretty much given up on the wish ever coming true. He is a workaholic attorney whose path happens to cross hers— and not in the best way. A little mistaken identity and holiday magic help the two fall in love. But, once the true identity is revealed, will all bets be off? You’ll have to watch and see.

I would have given it 5 stars if I hadn’t found myself thinking, “How did they get so much time off from work during the holidays?” (smile)

A delightful movie. Perfect for a chilly night when you need some help getting over your own bah humbug feelings.

Really Nice Movie But Terrible DVD Production, January 23, 2006

This is a really nice movie and anyone who likes a good romance will really enjoy it. The problem with this dvd is that the digital copyright protection prevents it from being played properly on computers or dvd/vcr combo machines. It works fine on machines that contain only a dvd player. I found this to be extremely frustrating and inconvenient. I wound up with 2 dvd’s and they both behaved in the same way.

As a 12 year old, Holly Grant meets Santa and as she thinks she is too old for traditional gifts, she tells Santa she wants a boyfriend for Christmas. He leaves a gift under her tree with a message: she will receive her requested gift in the 20th year “when two hearts are ready”. Time then goes to almost 20 years later when Holly is in her 30′s and is working for a non-profit organization. Enter Ryan Hughes, a lawyer, who courtesy of Santa winds up being Holly’s gift for Christmas. A mistake with a joint client causes Ryan to have a falling out with Holly…

Almost as good as it gets, March 5, 2006

I work as a clerk in a library, and have customers who ask me for recommendations for good “chick flicks”. I always recommend “Straight from the heart”, with Teri Polo because it contains a sweet romance with a good story line and doesn’t have to use scenes involving a sexual encounter to keep one’s interest. This movie, “A boyfriend for Christmas” contains one scene where the young woman asks her potential boyfriend his sexual preferences (he answers with a light response, and the subject is closed), and another where she calls him late one night, and asks him what he is wearing (another light response), but other than that, it is a decent romance story that has a nifty little surprise at the end that I didn’t even guess at. This movie is definitely a keeper!

Some of us women would appreciate more movies like the two above mentioned ones, that have a really great romance story without all the sex and profanity. Movie makers, listen up!!

The five PLUS stars are for the MOVIE, not necessarily this 2005 DVD release . . . . (Now that I have seen the new DVD, I give it 3 1/2 or 4 stars. See explanation below.)

In Oct. 2002, Disney Home Video released its first DVD formatted THE MUPPET CHRISTMAS CAROL. The response was both pro and con. The response that was negative dealt with two primary issues:

(1) That the 2002 DVD was pan-and-scan (AKA “full screen” or “1.33:1″) instead of widescreen, and, in fact, unlike many DVDs, did not even offer the viewer a choice between pan-and-scan and widescreen. For fans of the movie who prefer widescreen, this was a great disappointment!

(2) That the 2002 DVD for Region 2 and perhaps other regions also removed the “When Love Is Gone” song. Disney has not, to my knowledge, offered an explanation for the removal. I would guess that it was because the song is “sad” and someone at Disney probably decided that such a “sad” song did not belong on…

Charles Dickens’ classic tale "A Christmas Carol" has probably been adapted for stage, screen, and TV more than any other story in the history of literature. Many have been really great — the Mr. Magoo animated version, Patrick Stewart’s one-man stage show, the George C. Scott version, etc. But one of the best is definitely "The Muppet Christmas Carol," directed with heart and intelligence by Brian Henson. This version is particularly noteworthy because it combines two beloved pop-culture icons: Dickens’ story and the Jim Henson Muppets.

It’s been a long time since I read Dickens’ original text, but from what I remember, the MCC is quite faithful to Dickens. Like the other Muppet films, MCC combines human actors with the whimsical Muppet characters (just in case you don’t know what a Muppet is, it’s a sort of puppet). This DVD contains a 4:3 version and a 16:9 widescreen version.

Disney Home Video reps have confirmed that only the 4:3 pan & scan version is the home video version which contains the full version of this movie. The widescreen version is the theatrical cut and does not include the song “When Love is Gone”.

I read a review in which the reviewer talked about it being in B&W versus color, and how kids don’t like B&W, etc. How sad! I am very glad I am old enough to not expect every movie to be in color. To me, besides the wonderful acting and, of course, the timeless story, the black and whiteness actually adds to the picture, to the dreariness of Scrooge’s life before that fateful night. The merry parts, yet, are no less merry for it being in B&W.

No, I have not seen every single version of “Christmas Carol,” nor have I wanted to. This version is the one, to me. The only thing better is reading the book itself.

This is one of my favorite movies for the holiday season. A few years back it was remastered and it looks unbelievable! They also added the colorized version in the set. This is great for all the children who tend not to like B&W movies. Last year when the blu-ray was announced, I was sure they would do the same thing, but they didn’t. The blu-ray is B&W only. I realize that there are those of us who would prefer that nothing be done to make B&W movies into color! However, as I’ve said, some people really like it AND, You get BOTH B&W and Color. You don’t have to watch the color one if you don’t want to. I for one, will not be replacing my DVD until they offer me both B&W and Color versions! Why should I, my kids will only watch the color one. I do wish they’d get around to though, I’d love to see it on Blu-ray.

Brilliant; sets the standard for X-Men films, June 2, 2011

The X-Men films are kind of a huge letdown as a whole, aren’t they? The first two are pretty good, but everything good they had going for them was completely destroyed once The Last Stand came to fruition. Thank you, Brett Ratner. And X-Men Origins: Wolverine just drove the franchise even further into the ground; kudos, Gavin Hood. So there probably isn’t any reason to get excited over a new X-Men film even if it is a prequel to the X-Men films people actually enjoy. Why would we want to see another comic book movie with limitless potential only to drop the ball yet again? Not only does X-Men: First Class take that ball and run with it but it uses it in all the right ways and reminds you why you loved the X-Men in the first place.

The cast is way better than it has any right to be. Everyone fits their character incredibly well and works fantastically as a cohesive unit. Kevin Bacon seems like a bit of an odd choice for Sebastian Shaw at first, but any doubt you may have…

What drew me to check out X-Men: First Class was not any particular love of comic books nor any particular fondness of the previous films. What drew me to this film was the presence of actor Michael Fassbender, whose increasingly eclectic work has continued to impress me more and more with each new film he appears in. I recall little about the first three X-Men films, besides that I found them enjoyable and I admit that I haven’t even bothered to see X-Men Origins: Wolverine. I figured it was only a matter of time before Fox rebooted the X-Men series after the lackluster reception of the last two X-Men films. From reviews I expected a pretty decent movie. Surprisingly, it was even better than I expected. I liked all 3 original movies, btw, and I really have to say this was a much better quality movie still. Good casting and acting. Good story. Great introduction to characters and tie-ins to the comic book universe. Also didn’t do anything to upset the time line with the original movies, which I appreciated. It was also neat to see actors I didn’t even know would be in this movie, plus a ton of good actors who are somewhat recognizable but not enough that I could tell you who they were. Some things in the story didn’t fit 100% with the comics, but just pretty insignificant things, and I really didn’t mind at all. For instance, it would appear that Scott Summers’ brother Alex was older than him? Aah, that’s alright, Havoc was never that big a deal anyway. The Simpsons Movie features excellent animation, a good plot that moves along very well, great gags and awesome voiceovers by the cast. There are so many gags that there’s bound to be jokes in this movie that will amuse just about anyone!

The action starts when Lake Springfield is practically destroyed by excessive pollution; and so the town must clean it up. They do! Unfortunately, however, things don’t stay that way–and there begins the REAL plot of this film. Homer (voiced by Dan Castellaneta) decides to take on a pig for a house pet. When Marge (voiced by Julie Kavner) casually asks Homer what he’s doing with the pig’s “leavings;” Homer takes Marge out back and shows her his “silo” full of pig “droppings.” Marge isn’t too happy; and eventually Homer realizes he MUST get rid of the festering silo. Naturally, where does Homer go to get rid of the silo? Lake Springfield! Once again the lake is unbelievably contaminated.

Departure from strip format, but still good, January 5, 2008

In the TV series, what you’ve got is something of a linear main-plot with a lot of sub- and mini-plots interwoven. And those plots revolve around the humor and comedy, kind of like the plot revolves around the sex in an x-rated movie-not that I would know, but just based on what I’ve heard. Anyway, this movie does not reflect this strip cartoon structure, which is actually the kind of material that Matt Groening started off doing. Anybody remember Life Is Hell comics? So with The simpsons movie what you’ve got is the reverse: more of a dominant main linear plot, with the comedy revolving around it much more than what you’ve got in the TV series. And this makes sense for a feature-length film, otherwise why make one, right?

It was a movie that was nearly two-decades in the making. The creators and writers said they wanted to make sure that when they brought America’s favorite prime time animated family to the big screen that it would be done right. Many past writers were brought back to flesh out the story and enliven the characters. Most of it was done under a veil of secrecy. Over 150 different drafts were written and copies of scripts were shredded after each scene was taped. It was a massive undertaking, but for a show that has grown to include a massive cast of secondary characters it had to be that way. William Castle was one of the true geniuses of horror, and Thirteen Ghosts represents a modernized, special effects-heavy remake of his 1960 film of the same name. I would file this effort under C for cool rather than F for frightening, although I suppose many less inured to the tricks of the horror trade might find this film a frightening detour into madness. Thirteen Ghosts offers an exciting, gory, romping good time, and I think the real key to its success is not its plot, acting, or CGI effects; rather, it is the movie’s establishment of something different from your standard horror fare. For the most part, all of the action takes place in a single setting, a technological marvel of a house built entirely of glass walls. While the process of shooting scenes in such a highly reflective setting must have been quite a challenge to the crew, the shooting style allows for a more open-ended atmosphere of fear, where things that go bump in the night can appear where you least expect…

Suprisingly Good!, January 5, 2002

I went to see this movie out of curiosity, the previews were interesting, and I have always liked Shalhoub (especially since "The Siege"). I wasn’t expecting much based on the recent horror flicks that I have seen, but was suprised at how good this movie was. The ghosts had me grabbing my neighbor’s arm, yelling at the screen, and covering my eyes! I was raised on horror flicks so this is no easy task.

Real quick – what do you get when you take an unbelievably intricate mansion, add one widower, his two kids, the nanny, a physic, a supernatural specialist, and twelve very disturbing, very frightening (and very dangerous) ghosts? Edge of your seat, white knuckled, hair raising fun!

Thir13en Ghosts is about a struggling family who inherit a strange all glass house from their late uncle Cyrus. On the outside the house seems interesting, but inside is where the terror is lurking, trapped in 12 different glass cells, waiting to be released. And someone wants one more to add to the collection, which would make it thirteen ghosts.

I just loved this film, a great, terrifying film that really takes you on a rollercoaster ride! All the actors in the film give great performances, especially the always lovely Shannon Elizabeth and the witty Mathew (Scream) Lillard. The ghosts in the film look amazing, thanks to KNB FX. Speaking of amazing, the glass mansion is very incredible, so errie and yet very beautiful. There are just to many good things to say about this film! First time feature film director Steve Beck did a great job with the film, and it turned out awsome!
